Brunson McKinley: migration issues should be settled on regional level

BelTa, 19 September 2008

Migration issues should be tackled on the regional level, IOM Director General Brunson McKinley said before signing a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Administration of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Minsk on September 19.

“The rich experience of IOM in assisting governments to control migration processes shows that migration is a transnational phenomenon and cannot be regulated within only one state in the long-term perspective – it requires joint efforts,” Brunson McKinley noted. He added that the regional associations like the CIS can play a key role in uniting efforts to find the best solutions for migration issues today and tomorrow.

According to him, the necessity to address the migration issues regionally has been widely recognized, and these issues are discussed more and more often in the regional and subregional contexts. The IOM is doing its best to support the regional dialogue on migration issues and the CIS can be one of the brightest examples

Migration is a catalyst of changes and development. It is unwise to ignore its power in the rapidly changing world. At the same time, migration, especially unregulated migration, causes serious problems such as social and political conflicts in some countries, social solidarity and identity issues, social insecurity of migrants. “I am strongly convinced that these problems are not insurmountable. Migration can make a contribution to the economic, social and cultural development of both the recipient countries and countries of origins of migrants. Much depends on the policy pursued by a state,” the IOM Director General concluded.
