Belarus plans to set up dactyloscopy system on its border

BelTa, 18 November 2008

Within the framework of the ENEI 3 international technical assistance which implementation will start in 2009, Belarus plans to set up a dactyloscopy system on its border, head of the international cooperation department of the State Border Committee of Belarus Yuri Fedorov told reporters on November 18.

“We are going to set up a dactyloscopy system that will start the creation of the system similar to the Eurodac system. In the future, we hope the Belarusian system will be correspondent to the Eurodac system,” he said.

The seminar “International Standards and Standards of the European Union in Migration and Asylum Policy” that is held in Silichi on November 18-20 will include the Eurodac system demonstration. The system is used for comparing the fingerprints of asylum seekers and illegal immigrants in order to facilitate their identification. “The knowledge that frontier guards receive on the Eurodac system will help develop the similar system,” Yuri Fedorov said.

According to him, Belarus has already received a preliminary approval of the European Commission to finance the project that will be implemented jointly with the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration.
