First Travelling Film Festival in Central Asia on Migrant and Human Rights01.02.2007 On 4 December 2006, in Almaty, Kazakhstan, IOM launched the First Travelling Film Festival on Migrant and Human Rights in Central Asia entitled “Rights in the Spotlight”. Funded by the Royal Danish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and carried out within the Central Asia Partnership Group Programme, this initiative has started with screenings in Kazakhstan and then further travelled to Kyrgyzstan in December 2006. The films will travel to Tajikistan in February 2007. Screenings have been organized within the local communities, including schools and universities, where a specially prepared tutorial material has been presented and distributed. This film festival presents films and documentaries portraying the realities of migration in Central Asia and in other regions of the world. After each screening, thematic sessions are organized and provide an opportunity for discussions on topics such as trafficking in human beings, labour migration and smuggling of migrants. All the films selected for the Festival reveal the human dimension of migration and portray characters whom the audience can easily identify themselves with. Building on successful examples of human rights film festivals conducted in other parts of the world, the First Traveling Film Festival introduces difficult themes into the public debate and features films produced in Central Asia, Eastern Europe, France and Australia. |
